wedding by proxy..people still do this??

A proxy wedding or  is a one where the bride or groom (or both) is not physically present but represented by another person.
I would never understand the reason why anyone would agree to a proxy wedding (what happens if he/she says they're no longer interested, did you really marry them?)
however some reasons people have given include that one or both partners cannot attend for reasons such as military service, imprisonment (why are you even bothering yourself..do you know how many free single people live in this world?), or travel restrictions or when a couple lives in a place where they cannot legally marry.

Anyway people have been known to celebrate weddings with pictures (of the spouse) or representatives of the spouse, (usually family members).
 That said , i stumbled on this picture today

and just had to ask you all..
