DEAR GUYS : Factors to consider before proposing to her!

There are three important questions a man must decide on when he makes the life-changing decision to propose marriage to his girlfriend. The first being 'who to propose to' (which you must have sorted out by now, no?), the second of course being 'what to propose with' and the final one 'how to propose'. In this article i'll be giving a few pointers on 'what to propose with and in the next,' how to propose'

To ensure that you understand how important it is for you to make the right decision on her engagement ring, kindlysearch on google the phrase 'i hate my engagement ring' or any words conveying similar meaning. You'll be surprised at the number of women who hate the rings that they wear as their engagement rings.

You really need to put a whole lot of thought into this because even though it is just there to symbolise your promise to spend the rest of your life with her, you do not want her spending the rest of her life hating the symbol of that promise, neither do you want her to be so ashamed that she'd rather not share the news of your engagement (you'll see such stories on the internet, just search on google like i asked you to). Alright so lets get the ball rolling,some factors you should consider amongst others include:

- The material

An engagement ring could be metal, wood or even plastic, but because we're in Nigeria its better to restrict your options to metals and even at that slim it down to Gold or silver. Most people buy gold engagement rings but nowadays sterling silver is also becoming a popular alternative. If you choose to buy gold you must of course determine what kind of Gold she'll prefer (there's white , pink and yellow gold). Personally i prefer white gold, but you're not buying it for me are you?

Note that her wedding band is most likely going to be of a matching material with the engagement ring, so if you choose to buy her a rubber ring be prepared to wear one too.

-The size

The size should of course be determined by the size of her fingers.(steal one of her rings if you have to, but don't ask a friend to find out so it'll still be a surprise) Take care about this one and don't buy something so tiny that you'll deny her that moment of showing her ring around in joyful celebration. If you absolutely cannot determine her finger size ensure that you pick a big enough ring and discuss adjustment options with the jeweller.

-The style/design

The ring should suit her fashion style not yours! very important, she is after all the one who's gonna be wearing it, not you. You can ask her friends after swearing them to secrecy, they'll probably hae an idea what she wants. There is however one thing i believe to be a fact, there are very few women who want an engagement ring without stones on it, if you know any of such women i'll be shocked.

-The cost

While i don't believe you should break the bank just to put a ring on it, there is an unspoken rule that a man should spend at least the cost equivalent of two to three months of his annual salary on the purchase of the ring. If you don't agree, to each his own but the main reason for the rule is to ensure that the ring is an honest signal of a man's commitment to his future wife.

Where to buy the ring

You can order online from Jewellers like H. samuel , Tiffany's and the like, but that would mean having to wait a while for delivery (consider this if you do have the time. However if you don't, i have taken the time to find some Nigerian companies who sell engagement rings, you can check them out online to make a choice, but make sure you visit and see the ring yourself before making a purchase.
